Effective capacity building
BYO GUIDES in collaboration with the Coral Identification Capacity Building Program (CICBP) offer Coral Finder Workshops to build skills and capacity in coral identification and survey techniques. We train people to train themselves thereby building real capacity. Our workshops take advantage of the Coral Finder’s excellent potential for self directed learning by users of all skill levels. By focusing on visual learning and minimising text, participants make dramatic real time gains in the company of our expert workshop tutors. Over the course of a workshop the tutor / participant relationship evolves from teaching to mentoring. Because participants rapidly build meaningful capacity during the workshop they become very motivated thereby avoiding the usual post experience disappointment usually associated fly in/fly out expert workshops.
Coral Finder workshops can be run effectively with small or large groups in field and/or laboratory settings. Field sessions can be either snorkel or SCUBA based. Workshops are best facilitated through a partnership with a local organisation and participants are provided with their own copy of the Coral Finder Toolkit. Post workshop support is provided through the Coral Hub website. For more information about conducting workshops please contact us directly at…

Results of testing
The Coral Identification Capacity Building Program (CICBP) in collaboration with the Fiji Locally Marine Managed Area (FLMMA) network ran coral identification workshops at the University of South Pacific in Suva. Fiji.
Around 50 people were trained in basic of coral identification using the Indo Pacific Coral Finder. The Coral Finder puts comprehensive identification of coral genera within the reach of beginners. Intermediate level participants also dramatically improved their coral identification skills and recommended the tool for rapid revision and ongoing learning. Feedback about the workshops and resources from participants was very positive with over 90% of workshop participants stating that the Coral Finder would be useful in their work.
